Zainab Salbi is an Iraqi American humanitarian, entrepreneur, author and a media commentator dedicated to women's rights and freedom. She is currently focusing on creating multi media platform focused on Arab women and is co-producing a documentary on the role of women in the Arab Spring with Abby Disney and Gini Reticker.
At 23, she founded Women for Women International, a grassroots
humanitarian and development organization dedicated to serving
women survivors of wars rebuild their lives. Under her leadership
as CEO (1993-2011), the organization grew from helping 30 women to
more than 300,000 women in 8 conflict areas leading to a
distribution of more than 100 million dollars in aid and loans.
She brings international women's issues to mainstream attention
in the US, making philanthropy accessible to women at the
grassroots level, pioneered bringing microcredit programs to post
conflict areas, and building a program that combines access to
knowledge with access to resources to lead to lasting change in
women's lives. Her expertise in conflict areas, in development and
women's issues led her to testify extensively at the House, Senate,
and various sectors of US government.
Salbi is also the author of a number of books including a
national bestseller "Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny:
Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam" (with Laurie Becklund).
